We are living in days that the Bible foretold of when false teachers would abound. Countless individuals are twisting the gospel message for their own gain and to amass large followings. They claim special revelation or simply leave out key passages in order to change the message of the Bible to meet their desires. An act which God speaks strongly against as sinful in His word. Never before has false doctrine been so wildly preached and accepted as truth. None of this should be surprising to us as God’s people. Because the Bible told us it would all happen more and more as the last days approach. But how do we ensure we are not taken captive by false teaching? It all starts with not believing anything the contradicts the preserved word of God.

The Bible is the end all be all when it comes to forming beliefs and doctrine. There is no other source from which we are able to learn about or truly understand the God we serve. Our personal feelings and beliefs are no comparison for the inspired word of the Lord. Everything we believe should be able to be found in and referenced from the Bible. There also should not be anything from the scripture that we do not believe. In no way should our beliefs contradict what God has recorded in Scripture. Whether that is in disagreement or agreement. Any belief not found within the pages of scripture is nothing more than false.

2 Timothy 3:16–17 (ESV)

16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.

2 Peter 1:20–21 (ESV)

20 knowing this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture comes from someone’s own interpretation. 21 For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.

Hebrews 4:12 (ESV)

12 For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

So in order to safeguard our faith, we must be well versed in the word of God. Writing it on our hearts and minds through daily study. Statements and teaching that contradict the Bible should be immediately apparent to every Christian because they intimately know God’s word. We should be able to differentiate between what is true and what is false with relative ease.

2 Timothy 2:15 (ESV)

15 Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth.

Joshua 1:8 (ESV)

8 This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.

Deuteronomy 11:8 (ESV)

8 “You shall therefore keep the whole commandment that I command you today, that you may be strong, and go in and take possession of the land that you are going over to possess,

But with this when we hear new teaching that goes against what we have been taught we should turn to God’s word. Acting in like manner to the righteous Bereans who didn’t immediately accept Paul’s message about Jesus. But instead took the time to turn to the scripture and see if what He preached was accurate. Just as we should be willing to do to ensure we don’t accidentally place our faith in something that contradicts God’s word.

Acts 17:11–12 (ESV)

11 Now these Jews were more noble than those in Thessalonica; they received the word with all eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see if these things were so. 12 Many of them therefore believed, with not a few Greek women of high standing as well as men.

Those who teach a different doctrine than that of the Bible in its fullness often don’t look like those who you would expect to contradict Scripture. They make themselves look like righteous people when in fact they are anything but. The Bible says the devil makes himself appear like an angel of light and it is no surprise his servants do the same. So we must not simply take someone’s words as Gospel regardless of their position, following, or even how sincere they seem. Instead, we must ensure that what they teach fully aligns with God’s word in its context before accepting their teaching as truth.

2 Corinthians 11:13–15 (ESV)

13 For such men are false apostles, deceitful workmen, disguising themselves as apostles of Christ. 14 And no wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. 15 So it is no surprise if his servants, also, disguise themselves as servants of righteousness. Their end will correspond to their deeds.

Matthew 7:15 (ESV)

15 “Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves.

Matthew 24:24 (ESV)

24 For false christs and false prophets will arise and perform great signs and wonders, so as to lead astray, if possible, even the elect.

An unnamed prophet from Judah learns the hard way why you never trust a word from someone that contradicts that of God. He was sent by the Lord to deliver a message to King Jeroboam which he did faithfully. But in that, the Lord told him not to eat or drink anything in the land. As well as to return home another way. All of which he was set on doing even refusing the king’s invitation.

But then an old prophet of God came offering a different word. Claiming he had received it from an angel when in reality he was lying. The prophet from Judah excepted the false word even though it directly contradicted the word he received from the Lord. Because he acted in disobedience to God and ate with the old prophet he never returned to Judah. Instead, he was slain on the way home by a lion.

1 Kings 13:7–10 (ESV)

7 And the king said to the man of God, “Come home with me, and refresh yourself, and I will give you a reward.” 8 And the man of God said to the king, “If you give me half your house, I will not go in with you. And I will not eat bread or drink water in this place, 9 for so was it commanded me by the word of the Lord, saying, ‘You shall neither eat bread nor drink water nor return by the way that you came.’ ” 10 So he went another way and did not return by the way that he came to Bethel.

1 Kings 13:16–19 (ESV)

16 And he said, “I may not return with you, or go in with you, neither will I eat bread nor drink water with you in this place, 17 for it was said to me by the word of the Lord, ‘You shall neither eat bread nor drink water there, nor return by the way that you came.’ ” 18 And he said to him, “I also am a prophet as you are, and an angel spoke to me by the word of the Lord, saying, ‘Bring him back with you into your house that he may eat bread and drink water.’ ” But he lied to him. 19 So he went back with him and ate bread in his house and drank water.

1 Kings 13:23–24 (ESV)

23 And after he had eaten bread and drunk, he saddled the donkey for the prophet whom he had brought back. 24 And as he went away a lion met him on the road and killed him. And his body was thrown in the road, and the donkey stood beside it; the lion also stood beside the body.

There are two major points we are to learn from this Old Testament account. First, we must not accept any message that contradicts what we know God to have said. Because God will not contradict His word or send someone to change what He already has said. If that happens we can be sure the individual is lying and a false prophet.

The other lesson in this is that when we accept a false word we also accept the consequences. In this case, the man accepted the punishment of his own death. In our case, we accept the punishment of not receiving the blessing of God and the reward of Heaven. Because by placing our faith in a false word we are simultaneously placing our face in a false god. It is impossible to have faith in the God of the Bible while also holding to any belief that contradicts His word. As we know it is only by placing our full faith in God that we will be saved.

John 3:14–16 (ESV):

14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, 15 that whoever believes in him may have eternal life.

16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.

Mark 16:16 (ESV)

16 Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned.

1 John 5:1–5 (ESV)

1 Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God, and everyone who loves the Father loves whoever has been born of him. 2 By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and obey his commandments. 3 For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome. 4 For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith. 5 Who is it that overcomes the world except the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?

So don’t believe anything thing that contradicts God’s word. Regardless of how it may make you feel or even how great the one saying it may seem. God does not contradict Himself and any message that contradicts His word is false. Accepting such a message is only going to lead you slowly away from God. Taking you from the path of salvation to the path of destruction. Prepare yourself and make sure you are not among those deceived by a contradicting false doctrine. By choosing to study God’s word today so you are armed to spot any contradictions and false teachers tomorrow.

    • I would say just what you have. Mormons follow a false prophet and a false truth therefore they are not Christians and are lost souls in need of a true relationship with Jesus. Sadly they believe they are following the God of the Bible even though their beliefs contradict the Bible. Which Paul makes clear in his letters causes separation from God. Sadly Mormons will be counted as those who believe they know God and call out to Him but are simply told depart from me I never knew you(Matthew 7:21-23).
