Recently I received a comment on one of our articles that caused me to really take a moment to think. The commenter said they would trust only what Jesus said and not what others said. Others referring to the other New Testament writers such as Peter, Paul, etc.. Is that really the way we as Christians should approach the scripture? Should we believe that those words we so often see written in red are more important than any others in our Bible?
The very simple and quick answer is no. That is because the Bible itself makes sure to point out the fact it only has one author. Yes, many throughout history were tasked to pick up the pen and write it but they did not write based on their own opinions and beliefs. They wrote the direct words that God gave them through His divine inspiration.
2 Timothy 3:16 (ESV)
16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness,
2 Peter 1:20–21 (ESV)
20 knowing this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture comes from someone’s own interpretation. 21 For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.
Now we of course know and understand that God and Jesus are one. That they are not separate entities but one God. Throughout the Old Testament God made this clear by consistently proclaiming there is only one God. In the Gospels, Jesus clearly points out that He and God are one.
Deuteronomy 6:4 (ESV)
4 “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.
Isaiah 43:11 (ESV)
11 I, I am the Lord,
and besides me there is no savior.
John 10:30 (ESV)
30 I and the Father are one.”
So if God is the author of every scripture, verse, and word in our Bible through His divine inspiration that means Jesus is as well. No verse of scripture should be held above any other verse based on who pinned it. Because they were all authored by the Lord and every signal one has a purpose. Every word is His and not man’s.
In fact, I would venture to say that if you are weary to trust in the verses that don’t quote Jesus you shouldn’t even trust those that do. Because they were not pinned by Christ Himself. Like every other passage of scripture, they were recorded by mere men. Such as Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. They were not even recorded at the time Jesus was with them but years after His ascension into Heaven. If one cannot trust the other writers how can they place their trust in those four?
Thankfully this is something that we do not have to worry about. As we know that God protects His word. We know the Bible was given by God and that it is eternal. Never changing, but remaining the same for all time, and worthy of us to put all our hope, faith, and trust in.
Luke 21:33 (ESV)
33 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.
I feel it must be said that all this is not to say Christians should discount the words of Christ. That is not the point at all. What I am saying is that while the words Jesus said are so important to us so are all the other words of scripture. Because they are all His.
When we read our Bible we must look past the name of the person who pinned it and remember that God wrote it. Paul pinned many books in our Bible but he authored not one. What Jesus said on earth and what He said through the inspiration of men carry the same value. They only work to compliment each other. Coming together to complete His perfect will.
I hope this will change the way you look at your Bible. Don’t put a higher value on one section than any other. Every passage of scripture is equal and important to us as God’s children. A lot is recorded through the gospels that came from the mouth of Jesus, but every word of the Bible came from His divine inspiration. Value them, study them, love them, and most of all live them.
