We have wrote on the subject of love many times. Pointing out how important love is and why. Also, teaching that Christians must love all people, hating no one. When most Christians read lessons in love they often skim through because they believe they already love. Which is good to an extent, but even if you already love, you still can love more.
It’s true that many Christians already live in a loving way towards their fellow man. They express this through giving, sharing the word, prayer, kindness, time, and a multitude of other ways. This is all amazing and much needed, but we can all always love others more and more. Just look at what Paul said to the Thessalonians.
1 Thessalonians 4:9–10 (ESV)
9 Now concerning brotherly love you have no need for anyone to write to you, for you yourselves have been taught by God to love one another, 10 for that indeed is what you are doing to all the brothers throughout Macedonia. But we urge you, brothers, to do this more and more,
Paul starts off by telling them how great they are already doing at loving others. Even stating that he didn’t really even need to write them about love because of how great they are at extending love. Yet he still told them to go deeper in love and love others more and more. This seems to be an instruction to keep the people from becoming complacent.
We must be careful not to gain a false mindset. Believing that we do enough through love already and extend love to enough people. There is always something more we can do. Always someone else who needs to experience the love of God through His people. Paul’s description of love in 1 Corinthians helps us to see how we can love more.
1 Corinthians 13:4–7 (ESV)
4 Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant
5 or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful;
6 it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth.
7 Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.
As we continue to grow in love our lives will begin to mirror those verses more and more. If you want to go deeper in love then compare yourself to those verses. In what areas can you improve? Until we leave this carnal world there will always be an area to improve in. That’s how we can always be working to love more and more.
With that, be sure you are extending love to all those you encounter. That does not mean cultivating a deep relationship with everyone you meet. It much simpler than that. Share a smile, hold a door, buy a meal, help someone, leave a nice tip, etc. The little things in life are able to show love just as much as the big things. Our real goal is for all people to experience the love of God.
John 15:12 (ESV)
12 “This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.
If the church in Thessalonica was able to receive a compliment from Paul on how well they loved. Yet were still told to love more. How much more can the church love others today? Pray God will help you to love others more. Ask God to keep the church from becoming complacent in love. Inspiring Christians as a whole to grown in love more and more.
