For years movies, TV shows, and even children’s shows have shown depictions of hell. Showing as a place where the wicked go to continue their wicked deeds for eternity. While having a grand time doing it. Even many chart-topping songs have made hell the center pierce. Describing hell as a place of wild parties and fun time as well. As Christians, we must ensure that the world does not get the wrong impression of hell from these sources. Because the truth of hell is much worse than anyone could ever depict.

While we can never truly express just how awful hell will be for the unfortunate souls sentenced to eternity in its bowels. The Bible does offer us a few peaks into this horrible place. One of those peaks comes when Jesus encounters the man who was possessed by many demons. It’s the small details in Luke’s account that really opens our eyes to the perils of hell.

Luke 8:30–33 (ESV)

30 Jesus then asked him, “What is your name?” And he said, “Legion,” for many demons had entered him. 31 And they begged him not to command them to depart into the abyss. 32 Now a large herd of pigs was feeding there on the hillside, and they begged him to let them enter these. So he gave them permission. 33 Then the demons came out of the man and entered the pigs, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and drowned.

Hell is in fact so awful that even the demons do not want to be forced to go there until their time. Those demons even begged Jesus to send them into the herd of pigs instead of sending them to the depths. If hell is so awful that even the demons do not want to go how much worse will it be mankind?

If it was not bad enough to see the demons begging to be sent somewhere else. The Bible gives us many other scriptures depicting the truth of hell. None of which match the false descriptions put forth by pop culture.

Revelation 21:8 (ESV)

8 But as for the cowardly, the faithless, the detestable, as for murderers, the sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars, their portion will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur, which is the second death.”

Matthew 25:46 (ESV)

46 And these will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.”

2 Thessalonians 1:8-9 (ESV)

8 in flaming fire, inflicting vengeance on those who do not know God and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. 9 They will suffer the punishment of eternal destruction, away from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of his might,

Matthew 13:42 (ESV)

42 and throw them into the fiery furnace. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

That’s what hell really looks like. It is not a place where people go to continue your their sinful lifestyle. In reality, a hell is a place of pain and suffering that nothing experienced in this life can ever compare to. Sadly, the Bible is clear that this is what lies ahead of anyone who lives a sinful lifestyle. As they will not be able to entire the Kingdom of God.

1 Corinthians 6:9–11 (ESV)

9 Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, 10 nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. 11 And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.

As you can see from the end of that verse there is good news for those still lost in sin. You can be saved from those sins and given a new life. By choosing to turn away from your wicked lifestyle and asking God to forgive you for your sins. Followed by baptism in the matchless name of Jesus. Then you will receive forgiveness for your sins and the gift of eternal life.

Acts 2:38 (ESV)

38 And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

1 John 1:9 (ESV)

9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Romans 2:7 (ESV)

7 to those who by patience in well-doing seek for glory and honor and immortality, he will give eternal life;

Jesus came to the earth for this very purpose. He wanted to ensure that no one would ever have to face the horrors of hell. God wants you to accept the free gift of eternal life that he is offering you.

John 3:16 (ESV)

16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.

Please don’t be tricked by those fictional depictions of hell that only make people feel good about sin. You can now see just how awful it really will be and that no one wants to end up there. So please take head to my words and follow the plan of salvation while there’s still time.
