Recently I read a statement made by an early 1900s preacher and revivalist named Smith Wigglesworth. He said that “No man looks at the circumstances when he believes. No man relies on his feelings if he believes. The man who believes God has his request.” This is a powerful statement that should ring true in the life of every Christian.
Sadly though many Christian do allow their feelings and what they see to get in the way of believing what God’s word says. Whether it’s sickness, a financial problem, or just a rough spot in life. Many Christians see their problems as so big that even God can’t help them. When in reality no problem is too large for our all-powerful Creator. Just look at the following verses that show God’s power.
Job 26:7-8 (ESV)
7 He stretches out the north over the void
and hangs the earth on nothing.
8 He binds up the waters in his thick clouds,
and the cloud is not split open under them.
Psalm 139:13-14 (ESV)
13 For you formed my inward parts;
you knitted me together in my mother’s womb.
14 I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.
Wonderful are your works;
my soul knows it very well.
Genesis 2:7 (ESV)
7 then the Lord God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature.
Psalm 147:4-5 (ESV)
4 He determines the number of the stars;
he gives to all of them their names.
5 Great is our Lord, and abundant in power;
his understanding is beyond measure.
Jeremiah 10:12-13 (ESV)
12 It is he who made the earth by his power,
who established the world by his wisdom,
and by his understanding stretched out the heavens.
13 When he utters his voice, there is a tumult of waters in the heavens,
and he makes the mist rise from the ends of the earth.
He makes lightning for the rain,
and he brings forth the wind from his storehouses.
These verses and many just like them affirm the power God holds over all creation. If you truly believe them to be true then you know that nothing is impossible with or for God. He created the universe and everything in it. Including each and everyone of us. This means that He has complete control over everything. At any moment He can do or change anything.
Because of this, we know without a shadow of a doubt that the sick truly can be healed through prayer. That no mountain is too big for God to move. That power is found in the matchless name of Jesus. When you understand these key principles of the Bible. You will never allow your feelings about a situation to affect what you believe to be possible with God.
Acts 4:30 (ESV)
30 while you stretch out your hand to heal, and signs and wonders are performed through the name of your holy servant Jesus.”
Matthew 10:8 (ESV)
8 Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse lepers, cast out demons. You received without paying; give without pay.
Philippians 2:9-11 (ESV)
9 Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Please understand that the devil wants you to have feelings of doubt. Especially when you are faced with what seems like unsurpassable odds. Because if he can cause you to dought God’s ability or existence then you will never get to the point of asking God for His divine help.
Thoughts of doubt may come into your mind but do let them manifest in your actions. Don’t allow the devil to lead you away from seeking the Lord’s help. Instead, cling to the truth found in scripture and know that God can do anything no matter the circumstance. Whether you need deliverance from temptation, a healing, provision or any other move of God it can happen.
Ephesians 3:20 (ESV)
20 Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us,
Matthew 21:22 (ESV)
22 And whatever you ask in prayer, you will receive, if you have faith.”
You may be thinking that you have never seen great things such as healings or proverbial mountains moving come through your prayers. There are of course multiple reasons for God to not answer prayer. Like the fact that it simply may not be a part of His will. But more often than not I believe that prayers go unanswered because the person praying has allowed their feelings to cause them to question God’s ability. Ultimately leading to them doubting and causing their faith to waiver. The Bible clearly says that those who doubt should not expect to receive anything from God.
James 1:6-7 (ESV)
6 But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind. 7 For that person must not suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord;
Don’t like those who Jesus spoke to in Matthew 22. Instead, know the scripture and truly understand the power God holds over His creation. Don’t be deceived by your mere human understanding and what you are able to see. Instead, push all your feelings aside in trust in the God of the Bible to do exceedingly and abundantly in your life and the world around you. No matter what you encounter on your walk turn first to pray and seek the Lord’s help and guidance.
Matthew 22:29 (ESV)
29 But Jesus answered them, “You are wrong, because you know neither the Scriptures nor the power of God.
Proverbs 3:5 (ESV)
5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart,
and do not lean on your own understanding.
Philippians 4:6 (ESV)
6 do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.
