Psalm 20:7 (ESV)

7  Some trust in chariots and some in horses,

but we trust in the name of the Lord our God.

Since the beginning of time, people have found various things to place their trust in. As the above verse shows the Bible does a good job of tracking what people have placed trust in over the years. Some trusted horses and chariots for protection. Others trusted idols made by the hands of mere men with wood and metal. Many turned to silver and gold believing that riches could solve everything. But all throughout history, there have been a few that have placed their trust in the only stable aspect in this life, God. Believing that their God would keep them anchored through any storm.

The truth is when someone places their trust in the things of this world it never ends well. Horses will stumble and fall. Quickly growing too old for the battlefield. When the lost and broken cry out to idols they simply do what they have always done, nothing. The Bible says that they will blow away. Even silver and gold can not be trusted because they can become worthless in seconds.

Psalm 20:8 (ESV)

8  They collapse and fall,

but we rise and stand upright.

Jeremiah 17:7 (ESV)

7  “Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord,

whose trust is the Lord.

Ezekiel 7:19 (ESV)

19 They cast their silver into the streets, and their gold is like an unclean thing. Their silver and gold are not able to deliver them on the day of the wrath of the Lord. They cannot satisfy their hunger or fill their stomachs with it. For it was the stumbling block of their iniquity.

Today we still find ourselves placing all our trust in the things of this world. Believing things are better now then they were back in the days of the Bible. We often fall into the trap of believing that the things we place our trust in will never fall us but that is simply not the case. All that we have been so careful to build up in our lives can slip away in seconds.

Cars can break down, houses can fall, jobs can be here one day and gone the next. All your retirement savings can be wiped away with one hack or dip in the market. We trick ourselves into believing that nothing bad will ever happen but the sad truth is bad things can and will happen to everyone. If all your hope and trust are placed in these things you will be left with nothing when things get bad.

Proverbs 11:28 (ESV)

28  Whoever trusts in his riches will fall,

but the righteous will flourish like a green leaf.

But this will not be the case for everyone. Because as the opening verse said some trust in the things of this world, but others place their trust in the Lord. The one who said He would never leave or forsake His people.

Deuteronomy 31:6 (ESV)

6 Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or be in dread of them, for it is the Lord your God who goes with you. He will not leave you or forsake you.”

For this very reason, the Hebrew writer said we should be content with what we have. The trust of every Christian should not be placed in the things of this world that will fail. But in the God who will never fail!

Hebrews 13:5 (ESV)

5 Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.”

God knows our needs before we ever speak a word in prayer. And not only does He know of our needs but He is willing to provide for them. The God of the Bible will not forsake those who seek Him but meet them will love and compassion.

Psalm 9:10 (ESV)

10  And those who know your name put their trust in you,

for you, O Lord, have not forsaken those who seek you.

Matthew 6:8 (ESV)

8 Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.

Philippians 4:19 (ESV)

19 And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.

When hard times come the Lord will see those through who have placed all their trust in Him. But that really does only apply to the people that have been placing their trust in Him before the storm came into their life. Which is the issue that we see in the lives of many people?

They claim to rely on the Lord but in reality, their faith is placed in their money and possessions. So when times get tough they turn first to those things and only turn to God as a last resort. To which God offers the same reply that He has been forced to give for centuries.

Isaiah 57:13 (ESV)

13  When you cry out, let your collection of idols deliver you!

The wind will carry them all off,

a breath will take them away.

  But he who takes refuge in me shall possess the land

and shall inherit my holy mountain.

This sounds harsh on the surface. God telling someone to turn to what they had really placed their trust in and away from Him. But the point is so everyone will understand that trust should have never been placed in those things in the first place. Once someone realizes the mistaken place they have placed this trust and repent for this wrongdoing. The Lord will still come to their rescue just as the Bible shows time and time again.

So follow the advice given to us in the Bible and place your trust in God alone. The creator of everything and the only things that will never cease to be. Nor will the Lord ever fail to meet the needs of all His people.

Psalm 13:5 (ESV)

5  But I have trusted in your steadfast love;

my heart shall rejoice in your salvation.

Psalm 31:14 (ESV)

14  But I trust in you, O Lord;

I say, “You are my God.”

Psalm 56:3 (ESV)

3  When I am afraid,

I put my trust in you.

Proverbs 3:5–6 (ESV)

5  Trust in the Lord with all your heart,

and do not lean on your own understanding.

 6  In all your ways acknowledge him,

and he will make straight your paths.

Romans 13:13 (ESV)

13 Let us walk properly as in the daytime, not in orgies and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and sensuality, not in quarreling and jealousy.

So what do you place your trust in? Is it in the things of the world? Or is it in the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end, the mighty God of the Bible? I can tell you that all my hope and trust lies with my savior and redeemer Christ Jesus. If everything was to go away tomorrow I will continue to trust and praise my Lord. Because I know He will see me through and I know this world is not my home.

Habakkuk 3:17–19 (ESV)

17  Though the fig tree should not blossom,

nor fruit be on the vines,

  the produce of the olive fail

and the fields yield no food,

  the flock be cut off from the fold

and there be no herd in the stalls,

 18  yet I will rejoice in the Lord;

I will take joy in the God of my salvation.

 19  God, the Lord, is my strength;

he makes my feet like the deer’s;

he makes me tread on my high places.

I hope that you will place all your trust in God alone. Not allowing yourself to be consumed with obtaining wealth and material things. Finding peace and comfort in those things. Anything you see right now can and will eventually be burnt up. Leaving only that which we can not see, the spiritual world of God which is eternal. Place your faith, hope, and trust in the one you have yet to see and be blessed.

2 Corinthians 4:18 (ESV)

18 as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.

John 20:29 (ESV)

29 Jesus said to him, “Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”
