It seems this is something that no one really wants to talk about right now. Probably because in times like these even the world’s greatest pessimists become optimists. Living on the same hope everyone else is that things will get better and return to life as normal. But the frightening truth is right now we simply do not know if things will ever return to normal. As time stretches on it is starting to feel like it might not. So what do we as Christians do if things never get better?

That truly is a mountain of a question, but the truth is the answer is quite simple. If things don’t change and this pandemic becomes our new normal. Reshaping our world and lives forever. We as people of God must continue to do what we have always done. Serve God with all that we have. Studying the Word, calling on the name of the Lord in prayer, offering up praise and worship, and continuing to make disciples.

Bad times do not disprove the existence of God. In fact, more often than not it is in the bad times that we are able to see God even better. Because God has not changed due to what’s happening in the world. We cannot allow what is going on around us to change us. We must keep on serving God the same way that we always have. Honestly, we should work even harder to serve the Lord as times get harder. This is the time to live a life worthy of the call we have been given.

Ephesians 4:1 (ESV)

1 I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called,

If things don’t get better that is not a reason to spend less time in God’s word. In reality, it will be time to spend even more time in the Word. Storing all of the scripture in our minds and hearts as we can. Looking for God’s guidance and building our faith through His word.

Romans 10:17 (ESV)

17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.

There is nothing that will happen that will ever change the fact that people are in need of the Lord. So no matter what happens, for better or worse, Christians must continue you to make disciples and lead the lost to salvation. Fulfilling the commission that our Lord and Savior gave us before taking His place in Heaven. Doing our job to bring others to faith using our knowledge of scripture.

Matthew 28:19–20 (ESV)

19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

Romans 10:14–15 (ESV)

14 How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? 15 And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!”

Whether things clear up in the coming months and everything gets better or things stay the same, this cannot affect our ability to rejoice in the Lord. We cannot allow circumstances to affect the way we praise God. Christians must share in the mindset of the prophet Habakkuk and keep on praising God no matter what. Even if shelves remain empty, jobs don’t come back, stocks keep falling, or anything else happens.

Habakkuk 3:17–18 (ESV)

Though the fig tree should not blossom,

nor fruit be on the vines,

the produce of the olive fail

and the fields yield no food,

the flock be cut off from the fold

and there be no herd in the stalls,

 18  yet I will rejoice in the Lord;

I will take joy in the God of my salvation.

If things don’t get better, prayer must continue. We can’t stop praying simply because we don’t receive an answer in the amount of time we think we should. Keep praying, asking and knocking always calling on the name of the Lord. Scripture tells us to pray without ceasing and that it is not contingent on whether life is good or not.

1 Thessalonians 5:16–18 (ESV)

16 Rejoice always, 17 pray without ceasing, 18 give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.

I know this is not what we want to think about right now but we must understand that no one truly knows if things will get better. Even if it does it may be some time before things turn around and we as Christians must remain strong. Embracing the hope, joy, and peace that we have that only comes from the Lord. Knowing that no matter how bad thing gets here on earth. It will never cast a shadow on the glory that will be revealed in Heaven.

Romans 8:18 (ESV)

18 For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us.

If things don’t get better that should not affect the way we as Christians live our lives. We must continue to serve our God and do the things listed in this article. In some cases, it will be the time to do more than ever before. What will you do if things don’t get better? Don’t let it lead you away from God but cling closer to the Lord than ever before!
