For decades there have been men and women who have made their living by taking a fall. We know them today as stuntmen. This unique group of people has learned how to fall without getting hurt. They know exactly what to do so that they will get up again when they are knocked down. They have spent the time to learn how to fall the right way.
The Bible tells us that we face a dangerous adversary that wants nothing more than to cause us to fall. Around every corner, he is lurking waiting to pounce like a roaring lion. The devil has one goal and that is to lead us away from God into a life a sin. Which all starts with just one fall. One small foothold gives the devil the leave to take away all the hard work we have put in.
1 Peter 5:8 (ESV)
8 Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.
Ephesians 4:27 (ESV)
27 and give no opportunity to the devil.
It’s a scary thought to think that one fall can change everything. Turning a righteous lifestyle to a sinful one. From a life headed to Heaven to one headed toward hell. However, if we can learn the right way to fall we have nothing to fear. There is a way to get knocked down and get up again like it never happened. That is by turning to prayer as you start to go down.
Like a stuntman, we must adjust our posture in the air as we begin to go down. Instead of trying to catch ourselves or just taking the fall on our face, we need to shift to our knees. The right and the only way to fall as a Christian is on to our knees in prayer. Because prayer has the power to change things. It can keep us from sin, alter any situation, and bring the forgiveness we need to stand again.
Mark 11:24 (ESV)
24 Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.
Philippians 4:6–7 (ESV)
6 do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
If we can learn to shift to our knees in prayer from the moment we start to fall we won’t stay down. We won’t be turned to a life of sin. Instead, we will be able to stand right back up with our heads held high. Still walking down the path that leads us to salvation. Don’t risk taking a fall that you won’t be able to stand back up from. Learn to fall into prayer.
There is a right way to fall and it saves us from a long hard recovery. But there is also a right way to get back up after a fall and it starts on our knees. Our merciful God gives us the ability to change our posture after we have already hit the ground. It’s can be much harder than shifting in the air but it will allow us to get back up again. If we turn to repentance the Lord is willing and just to for us for whatever sin has taken us.
1 John 2:1–2 (ESV)
1 My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. 2 He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world.
Don’t wait any longer to learn the right way to fall. It will be too late to learn once you need it. Become the Christian equivalent of a stuntman and know what it takes to stand up when you get knocked down. Be prepared to save yourself from pain, struggle, and recovery. Spend time in prayer now. Learn the form so you can quickly turn to it right when you need it and so that you can always rise again.
