We allow a lot to enter our lives through what we hear. All of it in one way or another begins to shape our beliefs over time. As Christians, we should strive to keep the majority of what we hear focused on God so that our beliefs do not fade over time. Resulting in us returning to a life in the world that we once worked so hard to escape. In the past, I have written articles and even shared sermons that give the biblical reasons Christians should only listen to Christian music. Yet I feel as though I have just discovered the greatest benefit we have to fill our ears with God-centered music instead of the music of the world.
As I am sure you can imagine the concept for this article came while listening to music. Music does an interesting thing to our minds. Something you do not have to be a scientist to discover. As we listen to music, the lyrics begin to stick with us and we often remember them better than we remember information that came from other formats. Such as books, television, and even podcasts.
Sometimes we can hear a song once and then sing along with it the next time it plays. I still can remember the words from songs from my childhood that I haven’t heard for years. Which is the very reason we often use music to teach certain concepts to children. For some reason music allows the words to live on within our minds for a lifetime. Knowing this from our life experiences should point us as Christians to listening to only Christian music. Songs that are filled with scripture or you could say filled with God’s own words.
2 Timothy 3:16–17 (ESV)
16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.
2 Peter 1:20–21 (ESV)
20 knowing this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture comes from someone’s own interpretation. 21 For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.
That is the greatest benefit of leaving the music of this world behind and turning to only Christian music. It is filled with the very words of God. The songs proclaim the truth directly from our Bibles. Just as songs from our youth still stick with us as adults. The Christian music we hear today will stick with us for years to come.
I’m not going to lie. It is hard to sit down and memorize Bible verses. But it is so important that we do so that when life gets hard we have something to turn to. Passages of scripture and promises of God that we have stored in our minds that we can draw on in a moment’s notice. By choosing to listen to Christian music outside of the church and in our daily lives we are creating a mental catalog of biblical truth. It must be said though that doing so is in no way a replacement for reading the Bible.
It’s true there is no single passage that says Christians must listen to only Christian music. However, I could give you many reasons from the Bible that show you should. Instead, though I want you to ask what benefits you are receiving from worldly music? What have you gained from it that can truly help your life? As Paul said you can do anything but not everything is good for you.
1 Corinthians 10:23 (ESV)
23 “All things are lawful,” but not all things are helpful. “All things are lawful,” but not all things build up.
Choose to do something that is good for you. That will benefit you greatly. Starting to listen to less of the music from the world and more of the music of the church. See the change it will make in your life. Preparing you for those dark moments when you just need a little light from God’s word. You will be amazed by just how much you are able to learn and remember about God and His word from just listening to Christian music.
I can see the benefit of doing this because a few years ago I begin to listen to exclusively Christian music. It has helped me in so many ways and because of that decision, I remember so many more passages of scripture and biblical truths. I know that it also will have a great impact on anyone else who chooses to do the same. So experience the benefit of only listening to Christian music today. Delete those old playlists and make new ones dedicated to the Lord.
