Christianity constantly sparks questions. The most common questions seem to take the form of “can Christians do this” or “should Christians do this”? Questions like those, of course, make sense because ultimately you are making decisions that will either lead to Heaven or Hell.

Sadly questions like that often start with good intentions but change shape over time. Instead of focusing on what one should not do to be saved. Many begin to try and see what all they can do before getting in trouble. In other words, people often try to ride the line between a life lived for God and a life lost in the world. We need to understand that it is not about what you can do or should do. But that more often than not it is better to just not do it. I find that Paul explains this perfectly in 1 Corinthians 6:12.

12 You say, “I am allowed to do anything”—but not everything is good for you. And even though “I am allowed to do anything,” I must not become a slave to anything.

A small spark has the ability to start a fire powerful enough to burn down a whole forest. So even though one small thing may not be bad in isolation, it is what it can lead to that is the real problem.

Alcoholics are not born they all start in the same place, with just one drink. It’s the same with drug addicts. The dependency starts small and quickly build. No one wakes up in adultery. It starts with a look or a thought and turns in to more. Backsliding does not happen in an instant. It is a slow process. The same can be said for how people fall into almost any sin. It all started with just one small action.

Don’t burn down all that you have worked so hard to build. Instead, choose to not allow sparks into your life. You never know what will fall just in the right environment to start a blaze. Sadly once the fire starts, it is often too late to put it out and you are forced to let it burn out on its own. Then all you can do is hope that enough is left over to rebuild.

Remember that the question itself is not really a bad thing to ask. It really comes down to answering that question correctly. So if you are faced with a question like “as a Christian am I allowed to…” the answer may just be it’s fine but it is probably better that I just don’t do it anyway. Because as we have already discussed that small thing may lead you down the path to something so much worse.
