Recently, I’ve heard several messages in which the focus revolved around how Jesus was moved with compassion which caused Him to work miracles in peoples lives. These messages were targeted to help us, the church, realize that we need to continue to feel compassion for others. So many times in our lives, we become complacent. We get comfortable. Which inevitably causes us to become hardened. If we become hardened, we will look down on those whom we deem are still in sin. All the while not realizing that by doing so, we are now in sin as well.

Luke 6:42

“Either how canst thou say to thy brother, Brother, let me pull out the mote that is in thine eye when thou thyself beholdest not the beam that is in thine own eye? Thou hypocrite, cast out first the beam out of thine own eye, and then shalt thou see clearly to pull out the mote that is in thy brother’s eye.”

Mark 7:6

“He answered and said unto them, Well hath Esaias prophesied of you hypocrites, as it is written, This people honoureth me with their lips, but their heart is far from me.”

Are You Really A Christian?

Just because you proclaim to be a Christian, does not mean you are living a life worthy of the title. We need to continually strive to live a life worthy of that title. Which means we need to feel compassion for others and act upon that. If you see someone in need, help. Do not make a judgment on them and say to yourself “poor them” and go on about your way. That is not what Jesus did. If we are claiming to be His followers, our lives need to be modeled after Him and His word.

Matthew 14:14

“And Jesus went forth, and saw a great multitude, and was moved with compassion toward them, and he healed their sick.”

Matthew 15:32

“Then Jesus called his disciples unto him, and said, I have compassion on the multitude, because they continue with me now three days, and have nothing to eat: and I will not send them away fasting, lest they faint in the way.”

Matthew 20:34

“So Jesus had compassion on them, and touched their eyes: and immediately their eyes received sight, and they followed him.”

Mark 1:42:

“And Jesus, moved with compassion, put forth his hand, and touched him, and saith unto him, I will; be thou clean.”

These are just a few verses that talk about Jesus being moved with compassion. If you want to find more verses about compassion, click here. In these verses, we learned that Jesus was moved with compassion for many reasons. He had compassion on the sick and healed them. He had compassion on the multitude because they had nothing to eat. Jesus had compassion on the blind and gave them sight. He had compassion on the broken and made them whole.

The Proof Is In The Pudding

To truly be worthy of the title “Christian”, we need to live a life that is Christ-like. This means we need to have compassion for those suffering not only physically but also, and more importantly, spiritually. As Christians, we need to be the helping hand to those in need. We need to help those who can’t help themselves. This is the example that Jesus laid out of us during His time on Earth.

Now you may be asking yourself “how can I do this? I don’t have a lot of money or any special powers.” You do this by blessing others with the blessings that God has given you. It is as simple as offering to pray for someone when they tell you of a need they have in their life. Or by blessing your waiter with a generous tip when you have the ability. Even if they weren’t the best waiter. Let’s be honest, we’ve not always been the best person, yet God still loves you enough that He died on a cross for your sins.

God didn’t look down on your and say “they’re too far gone” and let you stay in your sin. No, He made a way for you to be saved. He may have sent people to share His word with you. Or taken sleep from you until you looked to Him for help. Or so many other things! We need to remember that no matter what kind of sin a person is in, they are still worthy to be saved.

Paul said it so well in 1 Corinthians 6:9-11.

“Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, 10 Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God. 11 And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.”

How To Stay Compassionate

No matter how long you’ve been in the church, you need to never forget where God brought you from. If you do, then you will lose your compassion for the lost. You then will cease to be like Jesus and become hardened against helping those in need.

Please, I beg you, take time daily to thank God for all He has done for you. Pray that He helps you never forget where you’ve been brought from. Ask Him to lead you to those in need. To lead you to those who are searching for Him. In doing this, it will help you to stay humble before God. It will help you never think too highly of yourself to where you look down on those who are where you once were. This will help you stay compassionate for the lost and for the hurting. Just like Jesus. Which of course, is our goal in life so that we might make it to heaven one day.
