It would be hard to find someone who has never heard of the God of the Bible. But even though many have heard, or know, of God few understand Him. Two of the most important aspects of God that we must understand are that God is all-powerful and all-loving. If we are able to understand these things then we are better able to serve our Creator.
To understand how powerful God is we need to go to the book He wrote for the Church by inspiring mere men to write over the span of 1,500 years. Our Bibles allow us to flip through the History of the world. Taking in all the amazing displays of both power and love God has performed since creation.
The Act of Creation
We all know the story of creation that begins in Genesis chapter one. God created all things from nothing. He spoke and the world came to be. At His command, the Earth was formed and land raised out from the sea. Through His divine wisdom and understand all that we see, feel, and the experience was created. With the purpose of one day sustaining the life of all mankind. This was not a hard task for God. The New Living Translation says it perfect in Psalm 33:6.
Psalm 33:6 (NLT)
6 The Lord merely spoke,
and the heavens were created.
He breathed the word,
and all the stars were born.
The Lord merely spoke. All God had to do was speak. Not one finger was lifted. Not one bead of sweat formed during creation. God spoke and the world came to gather and it all happened in one day. After the earth was formed God continued and over the next few days God spoke into existence every living thing, except for man.
Gods Love Of Man Through Creation
The creation of man is unique in a few ways. Adam was not created in the way everything else was. God created man in His own image. Adam was made to be like God and given the purpose of reigning over the rest of creation.
Genesis 1:26 (ESV)
26 Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”
But man was also not created in the same manner as the rest of creation. Genesis 1:1-25 tells us that everything was created simply by God speaking it into existence. But God took the time to form man from the dust of the earth. Then breathed the breath of life into him.
Genesis 2:7 (ESV)
7 then the Lord God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature.
This shows how much more valuable mankind is to God than the rest of creation. He decided to put more into the creation of many then into any other aspect of creation. In Psalm 139 David describes the care and detail God takes to create each of us while we are still in our mother’s wombs.
Psalm 139:13-14 (ESV)
13 For you formed my inward parts;
you knitted me together in my mother’s womb.
14 I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.
Wonderful are your works;
my soul knows it very well
God’s Power Continued
Creation was not the point in which God stopped showing His power to the world. In Genesis 7, we read that God causes a great flood. Which wiped out everything on the face of the earth. Except for Noah, his family, and the animals that were tucked safely inside the ark.
Genesis 7:4 (ESV)
4 For in seven days I will send rain on the earth forty days and forty nights, and every living thing that I have made I will blot out from the face of the ground.”
Genesis 7:19-20 (ESV)
19 And the waters prevailed so mightily on the earth that all the high mountains under the whole heaven were covered. 20 The waters prevailed above the mountains, covering them fifteen cubits deep.
Genesis 7:24 (ESV)
24 And the waters prevailed on the earth 150 days.
Later God shows His mighty power again by splitting the Red Sea open and allowing the Israelites to cross safely to the other side. What even more amazing is that not only did the sea split. But they crossed on dry ground! As if it had never been wet.
Exodus 14:21-22 (ESV)
21 Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and the Lord drove the sea back by a strong east wind all night and made the sea dry land, and the waters were divided. 22 And the people of Israel went into the midst of the sea on dry ground, the waters being a wall to them on their right hand and on their left.
Power Over The Grave
One of the greatest examples of God’s power to many of us is the power He has exercised over the grave. Not just when death was defeated at the resurrection of Jesus either. The resurrection is powerful and the reason for our hope and faith in Jesus Christ.
2 Timothy 1:10 (ESV)
10 and which now has been manifested through the appearing of our Savior Christ Jesus, who abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel,
But God has shown power over death multiple times in the scripture. Both Elijah and Elisha prayed and through the power of God life returned to those who were dead. In Luke 7 Jesus stops a funeral procession and returned life to a Widows’ son. In John 11 we have the account of Lazarus’s death and resurrection. Lazarus had been dead for four days and yet God was still able to bring him back again!
John 11:43-44 (ESV)
43 When he had said these things, he cried out with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out.” 44 The man who had died came out, his hands and feet bound with linen strips, and his face wrapped with a cloth. Jesus said to them, “Unbind him, and let him go.”
And those are only a few accounts that show God’s power over the grave. The way in which God is able to control life truly shows His power. He has the ability not only to give life through creation. Or take life through death. But He is able to even restore life to those who have already passed. No matter the circumstance or the amount of time since they passed. God is able to do whatever is necessary to restore them to life and full health.
God’s Love
Each of the above acts shows the power of God but they also show the love God has for His people. But those are only a few examples, the Bible as a whole is the example of God’s unending love for mankind.
Jesus A Messanger of Love
Throughout the Old Testament, we see God stand up and fight for His people in order to protect them. We also see time and time again He gave the Israelites the chance to repent of their sins and they instead chose to serve false gods and chase their own desires. Yet, God did not stop offering them a chance at repentance. Even after all the evil and sinful things man did throughout History. He still loved his people so much that He sent Jesus to save us all.
John 3:16(ESV)
16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.
Just think about it, God sent Jesus as a messenger. The message we all deserved was one of death and destruction. A message warning us of what was to come but offering no way out because we simply don’t deserve one. Because no matter what we may want to believe we all have sinned and are deserving of punishment.
Romans 3:23 (ESV)
23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
Yet, when Jesus came He brought a different message. A message of love, forgiveness, mercy, grace, and the promise of life eternal. Because of God’s unfailing love, we are no longer destined for punishment. Instead, every person to walk this eath is given the opportunity to receive eternal life through Jesus Christ!
1 Timothy 2:4-6 (ESV)
4 who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. 5 For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, 6 who gave himself as a ransom for all, which is the testimony given at the proper time.
God’s Love Continues
But still, God’s love does not stop. While the idea of a perfect eternal life in Heaven seems as though it should be enough God offers us so much more. We are told to bring all of our needs to the Lord and that if we have lived according to His word and come with the right motives we can expect God to answer our requests.
1 John 5:14 (ESV)
14 And this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us.
James 5:16 (ESV)
16 Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working.
Along with answered prayers God gives us joy, comfort, and peace. All signs of love and compassion from our all-powerful God. We are even told not to worry about what we will eat, drink, or wear because our God will provide.
Matthew 6:31-33 (ESV)
31 Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. 33 But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.
The Bible even tells us that all things work out for the good of those who believe.
Romans 8:28 (ESV)
28 And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.
The Importance of This
And believe it or not but the list could keep on going. The Bible is full of promises and ways that show God is all-loving. While at the same time showing that He is all-powerful and able to do absolutely anything and everything.
This is what you need to understand. God truly loves you no matter what you have hiding in your past. No matter what you have done, said, or thought. It can all be forgiven, cast as far as the east is from the west. God will forgive any trespass and even choose to forget that it even took place.
Psalm 103:12 (ESV)
12 as far as the east is from the west,
so far does he remove our transgressions from us.
Jeremiah 31:34 (ESV)
34 And no longer shall each one teach his neighbor and each his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest, declares the Lord. For I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.”
And since God is all-powerful there is nothing He can’t get you through. No mountain is too big, no valley too deep. God can supply any need. He can heal any disease. God has done it all before as you can see throughout the Bible. He has provided for those in need. He has healed the sickest of the sick and even raised a few from the dead. Nothing is impossible for God!
Matthew 19:26 (ESV)
26 But Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”
All you have to do is put your trust in Him. Make the decision to turn from your old life and sinful ways. Begin to embrace God and follow in His ways. Put on your new life in Christ and live out a life worthy of being called a child of God. And the beauty is that God will even help you to do that through the Holy Spirit.
