God did not create everything in order to serve it. In reality, creation is expected to serve its creator. Which, of course, is the God of the Bible. This seems like common knowledge and something that a person of faith believes. But the truth is many Christians live their life in a way that makes it seem they believe God is meant to be their servant. Fulling their all their wants and needs.
We often fall into acting as though God is our servant by asking Him to constantly do things in our life. Like, bless us financially. Help us break through a really tough time. Or even heal us from some specific disease or sickness. Constantly requesting God to move in our lives.
Asking and asking yet never offering anything in return. By constantly asking or even telling God what we need Him to do for us we are taking on the role of master. Placing God in the seat of the servant. Which the Bible clearly states is our role.
Psalm 113:1 (ESV)
113 Praise the Lord!
Praise, O servants of the Lord,
praise the name of the Lord!
Psalm 119:91 (ESV)
91 By your appointment they stand this day,
for all things are your servants.
Psalm 119:125 (ESV)
125 I am your servant; give me understanding,
that I may know your testimonies!
Jeremiah 32:17 (ESV)
17 ‘Ah, Lord God! It is you who have made the heavens and the earth by your great power and by your outstretched arm! Nothing is too hard for you.
1 Corinthians 4:1-2 (ESV)
1 This is how one should regard us, as servants of Christ and stewards of the mysteries of God. 2 Moreover, it is required of stewards that they be found faithful.
2 Corinthians 6:4 (ESV)
4 but as servants of God we commend ourselves in every way: by great endurance, in afflictions, hardships, calamities,
Ephesians 6:6 (ESV)
6 not by the way of eye-service, as people-pleasers, but as bondservants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart,
Those scriptures and many just like them clearly show the relationship between God and His creation. God is the master of the universe and we are simply meant to do His will. As it has been shown to us through His word. To be a servant of God we must be doers of the word. Doing all that we are taught in the Bible.
Which means Christians need to love others as He first loved us. Giving generously to those in need. While proclaiming His greatness to all people. Doing all we can to bring others to a belief in Jesus and cause others to glorify His name.
1 John 5:3 (ESV)
3 For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome.
John 15:12 (ESV)
12 “This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.
Ephesians 4:28 (ESV)
28 Let the thief no longer steal, but rather let him labor, doing honest work with his own hands, so that he may have something to share with anyone in need.
Psalm 71:15-16 (ESV)
15 My mouth will tell of your righteous acts,
of your deeds of salvation all 71:15-1the day,
for their number is past my knowledge.
16 With the mighty deeds of the Lord God I will come;
I will remind them of your righteousness, yours alone.
As you can see Christians are to be servants of the Lord. Doing all we can to fulfill the will of our creator. That being said we do serve a merciful master who allows us to make our requests known to Him. He wants to know what we need and is willing to provide for those needs.
Exodus 34:6 (ESV)
6 The Lord passed before him and proclaimed, “The Lord, the Lord, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness,
Matthew 6:8 (ESV)
8 Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.
Philippians 4:19 (ESV)
19 And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.
Christians must realize that God is not our butler in the sky who we are empowered to boss around. Expecting Him to do everything the way we want it when we want it. That is simply not the way our relationship with God is supposed to be. We will always be the ones expected to serve, but it’s our service that means we are seeking first the Kingdom of God. Which the scripture says will add all things to our life.
Matthew 6:33 (ESV)
33 But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.
Don’t live your life as one who is constantly seeking God to do something for you. When you are never willing to do anything for God. Honestly, if that is the way you are living currently, please take some time to seek God’s will and study the scripture. It is important that you see how God truly expects you to live.
