Luke 5:4–5 (KJV)
4 Now when he had left speaking, he said unto Simon, Launch out into the deep, and let down your nets for a draught. 5 And Simon answering said unto him, Master, we have toiled all the night, and have taken nothing: nevertheless at thy word I will let down the net.
At times it makes no sense in our eyes to do what God is telling us to do. As we see in the case of Peter, he as a professional fisherman was being told by a carpenter how to catch fish. It made no sense in Peter’s eyes to let down the nets after going all night with no luck. But instead of following his understanding he said “Nevertheless at thy word” and let down the nets.
Christians today find themselves in the same place as Peter. God is speaking to each of us through His inspired Word telling us to do certain things. Some of which simply do not make sense in our human eyes. Whether it is the act of baptism, working only to give our income to others, turning the other check, etc.
Acts 22:16 (KJV)
16 And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord.
Ephesians 4:28 (KJV)
28 Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labour, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that needeth.
Matthew 5:38–39 (KJV)
38 Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth: 39 But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also.
While those things and many others like them may not make sense to us, they are a part of God’s Word. We know that they are important because God Himself has instructed us to do those very things. So we must not choose to lean on our own understanding and not follow the Lord’s instruction.
Proverbs 3:5 (KJV)
5 Trust in the Lord with all thine heart;
And lean not unto thine own understanding.
Instead, every Christian should follow in the footsteps of Peter. Choosing to do as we have been told by God. Even if it doesn’t make sense to us, seems pointless in our eyes, or we simply do not want to. At times that may very well mean telling God, “I do not understand why you have told me to do this nevertheless at thy word I will do it”.
When we do as God has said great things always follow. Salvation is poured out, others are blessed, the world is changed, and so much more is possible. So nevertheless at thy word should become a common phrase in our lives. In the case of Peter by listening to the word of Jesus even though it made no sense to him. He saw the biggest catch of his life and his life was forever changed.
Luke 5:6–7 (KJV)
6 And when they had this done, they inclosed a great multitude of fishes: and their net brake. 7 And they beckoned unto their partners, which were in the other ship, that they should come and help them. And they came, and filled both the ships, so that they began to sink.
Luke 5:9–11 (KJV)
9 For he was astonished, and all that were with him, at the draught of the fishes which they had taken: 10 And so was also James, and John, the sons of Zebedee, which were partners with Simon. And Jesus said unto Simon, Fear not; from henceforth thou shalt catch men. 11 And when they had brought their ships to land, they forsook all, and followed him.
The truth is that God’s Word is not always going to make sense to us. But that is no reason not to do all that is laid out in scripture. Even when that very word seems to carry no deeper meaning or as though it will yield no results. If God said it then we must do it because it has a far greater purpose.
Don’t pick the scripture you live out based on if it makes sense in your eyes. But always take the road of Peter and nevertheless chose to do as God has said every time. It will forever change your life and be a blessing to countless others just as it was for the Apostle Peter. Who led many to the Lord and was even used to lay out the Biblical plan of salvation on the day of Pentecost.
Acts 2:38 (KJV)
38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
