Shame on us! Yes, you read that right! Shame on us. You may be wondering if you are a part of this “us”. To find out, you will have to keep reading. In this article, I am going to take time and point out a few areas in our lives that we are most likely slacking in when it comes to our walk with God.

Matthew 6:33 (KJV)

 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.

This verse tells us that we should first seek the kingdom of God and His righteousness. Right before this it says in doing this you will not have to worry about what you will eat, drink, wear, etc (Matthew 25-32). Instead of doing this, we constantly worry about these things, then seek after God. That is if we remember to seek after God after worrying about all that stuff. We get so caught up in our earthly daily lives that we neglect our spiritual life. Shame on us!

One simple way to try your best to obey this verse is to start your day with prayer and bible reading. Wake up a little early and seek ye first the kingdom of God, then start your day. I know that seems difficult at times. I will be honest and tell you that I am not always successful in this. But God knows your heart and if you are truly doing your best that is what matters.

2 Timothy 2:15 (ESV)

Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth.

I love how this verse is stated in the ESV translation. It makes it so easy to understand! We are to do our very best to present ourselves to God as one approved. As a worker who has no need to be ashamed. One who rightly handles the word of truth. Sadly, though many of us do not live out this verse. We live our life however we please and every now and then try to present ourselves approved by God. Shame on us for living like that!

Instead of living like that, we need to focus on making sure we are living a life that is approved by God and then we can go on to our earthly needs and wants. In order to live a life approved of God, we need to know what exactly what that takes. To find that out, we need to spend time in God’s word studying out how He wants us to live. This isn’t just your typical daily reading. This is taking time to really study out His word. Not just read it so you can check off your “to-do” list.

James 4:8 (NLT)

Come close to God, and God will come close to you. Wash your hands, you sinners; purify your hearts, for your loyalty, is divided between God and the world.

Too often we allow things to creep into our lives. Things that cause us to pull away from God. To become divided between the things of this world and the things of God. Shame on us! This verse is a reminder for us to constantly work to purify our hearts. Again, sadly this is not like it should be.

We get caught up in the daily hustle and bustle and put God and the things of God (ie: prayers, bible reading, witnessing) in the back seat. We are called to “preach the gospel to every creature”. If we are spending time in God’s word and praying as we should, then God will constantly be on our mind. With God constantly on our mind, we will be more apt to share Him with those we are interacting with.

Colossians 1:9-10 (ESV)

And so, from the day we heard, we have not ceased to pray for you, asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, 10 so as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him: bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God;

In this verse, Paul is not only writing to the church in Colossae, but he is also teaching us that we need to pray for others. Pray that they grow in spiritual wisdom and understanding. Pray that they walk in a manner worthy of the Lord and are fully pleasing to Him. That they might bear fruit in every good work and increase in the knowledge of God. If you are not praying for others like this, shame on you!

In your daily prayer, you need to think of others. Not on only their earthly needs but more importantly, their spiritual needs. Paul shows us that we should feel a burden to pray for others that they may grow in God and in His ways.
