We all have those passages of scripture that cause us to stop and really think every time we read them. Some of those for me are the times when Jesus specifically asks people not to tell others about Him. Then those very people do the very opposite and tell everyone they encounter, about Him. This always stands out to me because we are instructed to tell others about Jesus but so often don’t. While these people were asked by Jesus Himself not to but they simply couldn’t help but speak of Him to everyone they came across.
Mark 1:43–45 (ESV)
43 And Jesus sternly charged him and sent him away at once, 44 and said to him, “See that you say nothing to anyone, but go, show yourself to the priest and offer for your cleansing what Moses commanded, for a proof to them.” 45 But he went out and began to talk freely about it, and to spread the news, so that Jesus could no longer openly enter a town, but was out in desolate places, and people were coming to him from every quarter.
Mark 7:36–37 (ESV)
36 And Jesus charged them to tell no one. But the more he charged them, the more zealously they proclaimed it. 37 And they were astonished beyond measure, saying, “He has done all things well. He even makes the deaf hear and the mute speak.”
Matthew 9:30–31 (ESV)
30 And their eyes were opened. And Jesus sternly warned them, “See that no one knows about it.” 31 But they went away and spread his fame through all that district.
Really these accounts cause me to question why there seems to be such a disconnect between us and them. You could say that they couldn’t help but tell others about Him because of the miracle He performed in their life. But I say if that is why they went away telling everyone they encountered about Him, then we should be doing the same. We may not have been healed but we have received a far greater blessing. All our sins have been forgiven and we are no longer headed on a path to destruction. Instead, we are headed down the glorious path that leads to Heaven.
John 3:16 (ESV)
16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.
Romans 5:8 (ESV)
8 but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
Many of us have had a lifetime of wickedness erased in an instant. An experience that forever changed our life. God pulled us out of the muck and the mire and placed us on solid ground. No longer are we the same hateful, angry, sad, drunk, addict, self-centered, envious, proud, wicked, and just downright sinful person that we used to be. God has made us a new man and we would not be where we are today if He hadn’t been there to pick us up when we turned to Him.
2 Corinthians 5:17 (ESV)
17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.
Ephesians 4:24 (ESV)
24 and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.
This knowledge should cause us to be like those we see in scripture. Christians should look in the mirror and see the new life that God gave them and run out into the streets to tell everyone they can about Him. Telling of the amazing things He has done in our lives and that He can do the very same things for them. We should not be able to contain ourselves. It’s time we follow the example of scripture and not be able to help but talk about Him. We need to do the very thing the psalmist said and declare the Lord’s mighty deeds to all people. Tell everyone about all His marvelous works.
Psalm 96:3 (ESV)
3 Declare his glory among the nations,
his marvelous works among all the peoples!
I truly believe if Christians would begin to share what God has done for them like never before we will see a result like the one we see after the man healed of leprosy told everyone of what Jesus did for Him. Churches filled with more people than ever before coming to encounter the great God we have said so much about. There should not be a disconnect between us and those who couldn’t help but tell others about them. They received a great healing, but we have reached so much more in a new life and a promise of a life to come. Go and tell someone what God has done for you today!
Please help us to get this message in front of more Christians. There needs to be a revival of Christians telling everyone they can about Jesus Christ. Help us spark this revival by taking a moment to share this article on your social media. By doing so you are not only helping other Christians but thanking the first step in sharing your faith with those who don’t share it. To share simply click one of the icons below.
