No matter how long you have been serving God, you will still face temptation on a regular basis. As long as there is sin in this world there will be a temptation to sin that pulls at each of us. As Christians, we must do all we can to overcome any sinful temptations that try to lead us astray. At times it can seem impossible especially when you have only recently come to faith. However, God wants you to know that you can overcome any and every temptation that comes your way.
We know this for two distinct reasons that come from the same passage of scripture. The first being that God’s word tells us that He will never allow us to be tempted beyond our ability. Meaning that we already have the strength to overcome any temptation that comes our way. There is nothing the enemy is able to try that God has not allowed and that He knows we can stand firm against.
Not only do we know we can overcome all forms of temptation because God only allows what we can already handle to enter our lives. But God gives us a way out of every temptation. No matter what it is that is tempting you to sin you can take the exit God has built-in. Christians must realize that they do not have to stand by while something is tempting them to sin. All we have to do is walk away and instead set our eyes on God.
1 Corinthians 10:13 (ESV)
13 No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.
That one verse is packed with information that teaches us there is no temptation we can’t overcome. Even the simple fact of knowing that our temptation is not unique can help us when we are tempted. All people go through the same temptations and if other people have been able to overcome then so can we.
Don’t allow the enemy to tempt you into sin because you don’t believe you have the strength to overcome. Know that God would not have allowed you to be tempted in that way if you couldn’t already handle it. You are strong enough to overcome anything the devil does in an attempt to lead you astray. Just be sure you always keep your eyes open for the exit.
