Humans have always allowed what they see to drive their decisions. This practice has stretched from the beginning of time to this present day. Our whole lives are based on what we can see. What we bring into our lives is picked primarily based on its appearance. Whether it is a home, car, clothing, a spouse, or even what we eat we let our eyes drive our choices. With very little attention given to that which cannot be seen.

This way of living focused primarily on what can be seen is an option for those living without a relationship with God. But when you begin to believe in a God that cannot be seen through human eyes your focus must shift. The Christian must not focus only on what can be observed through the eyes. Because as the Bible teaches that what we see will pass away leaving us only with the unseen.

2 Corinthians 4:18 (ESV)

18 as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.

The goal of the world seems to be to accumulate great treasures that can be seen. Even getting things so they can be seen by others and cause them to see the owner in a higher light. Many people allow the gathering of possessions to run their lives. Acquiring and desiring everything that catches their eye. For no real purpose because as Jesus taught the things of this world will just rust and decay. He was clear that His followers should look to gain on earth but to store up their treasure in Heaven where eye cannot see.

Matthew 6:19–20 (ESV)

19 “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, 20 but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal.

Not only do we allow our sight to have dominion over our desires in life. But we allow what we are able to see to affect our faith in God’s power. We know that the scripture teaches that the sick can be healed in the name of Jesus. Its clearly stated and we are told to pray for the seek with the faith to believe that God will heal them.

James 5:14–15 (ESV)

14 Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. 15 And the prayer of faith will save the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven.

Mark 16:17–18 (ESV)

17 And these signs will accompany those who believe: in my name they will cast out demons; they will speak in new tongues; 18 they will pick up serpents with their hands; and if they drink any deadly poison, it will not hurt them; they will lay their hands on the sick, and they will recover.”

Yet when the time comes to pray for that sick person what we can see causes us to question if they truly can be healed. Questioning if anything can bring them back to the fullness of health. Everything that we are seeing is causing us to not trust in the power of God that cannot be seen. But the truth is nothing is to big for the Lord who created each and every one of us. God has created control over every aspect of creation and even when we cannot see it He is working.

As children of God we know that we are never alone because our Lord and Savior is always with us. No matter where we find ourselves we will never find ourselves without God. When no one else will stand beside us He will. Because He will never leave or forsake His people. The Bible tells us that God dwells inside His people. Yet we still allow what we can see or cannot see to cause us to feel a sense of being allowed. At times not being able to see the Lord will lead to questions of faith and His existence

Joshua 1:9 (ESV)

9 Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”

1 Corinthians 3:16 (ESV)

16 Do you not know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in you?

Every Christian struggles with these issues of sight in one way or another. The biggest area of struggle often comes from our inability to see Heaven. God has given those who believe with the wondrous blessing of eternal life in Heaven. Something that we won’t see until the day that we enter it for the first and last time. Christians must not allow the fact that Heaven is hidden from their sight to cause them to question it. Trust in what Jesus himself said and know that even though you can’t see it it is there. Or He would not have told us so.

John 14:2–4 (ESV)

2 In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also. 4 And you know the way to where I am going.”

It is impossible to be a Christian who only trusts in what can be seen. Because so much of what God has promised us and even the foundation of our faith is based on what cannot be seen today. According to the Bible, the whole concept of Christianity is trusting in what is unseen. Just as the hope we have in Christ is placed in what we have not seen.

Hebrews 11:1 (ESV)

1 Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.

Romans 8:24–25 (ESV)

24 For in this hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what he sees? 25 But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience.

Don’t trust the deceitfulness of your eyes because they will lead you astray every time. Just ask Samson who was led astray by his eyes all his life. Only to finally fulfill his calling after losing his eyes. It should not take such an extreme measure for any Christian today. Instead, choose to take your focus on the things of this world you can see and trust in the unseen things of God. Be counted among the blessed that believe but have not seen.

John 20:29 (ESV)

29 Jesus said to him, “Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”
